AutoRuns

I've tried one or two 'startup managers', but this one really seems to be superior in its capture count - I was surprised at just how many processes actually run automatically. Very useful tool for removing those annoying processes installed by bundled software and for stuff you'd forgotten about.

Some nice additional features such as the ability to perform a search on the selected process from the context menu.

avast! Home Edition

A very good anti-virus program with free internet updates on virus definitions; can be configured to automatically update. Requires annual registration but well worth it - the ever-vigilant on-access scanner is most effective in quarantining attacks before they happen. Also scans e-mail.

CCleaner

Well-respected and frequently updated tool for removing the unnecessary detritus left behind during installations, uninstallations and general usage. I'd recommend learning a little about the subject and taking care to check only the options you're sure about before plunging in.

Comodo Backup

Solid backup software with intuitive interface. A little slow in operation and with a tendency to slow down multitasking, but it certainly does the job. Recommend to use with built-in scheduler so that most of the work can be timed for periods away from the PC.

Comodo Firewall Pro

Very good personal firewall, free for individual use. Patience required as it warns each time a new program tries to access the internet and every time access is attempted via a different route. You decide if it should or not, and you may give it one-off or permanent access, or even allow it to act as a server. Still comes back with repeat requests, though.

Free Hide Folders

Simple-to-use utlity for keeping one or more folders hidden from view until run. Single password does it all. Nag screen for registration, but using a PowerPro AutoRun script triggered from the nag dialogue can bypass all that. Can easily be configured to hide the folders on exit.

MailWasher

Good basic spam handling with a simple GUI hiding plenty of customisability. Nag banner pushing the pro version (I 'remove' this sneakily with PowerPro) and only single account handling, but this suffices for me.

Process Explorer

A stablemate of AutoRuns with configurability to satisfy all from the curious to the hardcore. Can even be configured to take over the Task manager role. Ideal for checking out any suspect processes.

Spybot - Search & Destroy

I retain this as a second attack module and for its resident protection 'TeaTimer' module

Spyware Terminator

Very easy to use and an impressive hit rate, this seems to be extremely thorough and is very much my new #1 in remedial crapware removal.
